Employer of Choice
The Tasmanian Employer of Choice program aims to assist employers to attract and retain skilled workers to support the growth of their business.
Employers that care about their people and build well-managed, inspiring workplaces gain a positive reputation among their staff. These organisations have an edge in the competition for skilled labour and a better chance to achieve high performance because talented people want a great place to work. Satisfied staff, whose ideas are valued, are more productive and provide better services, helping to win new customers.
The Tasmanian Employer of Choice program is widely regarded as recognising Tasmania’s best practitioners in creating a work culture that attracts, retains and grows the best people by actively promoting and catering for positive work life balance. The following Tasmanian case studies explore the strategies and initiatives successful organisations do to promote and support a great working environment for their people.
2018 Employer of Choice Awards
An Employer of Choice is a workplace with a reputation among its staff as a great place to work. The Awards recognise and promote Tasmanian organisations that, regardless of their size, successfully attract and retain skilled employees.
Entries for the 2018 Employer of Choice Awards are now open until December 15, 2017.

When you're ready to apply, use the online entry form
The following organisations are eligible to enter:
- Tasmanian businesses, enterprises, community and local government organisations that have a physical workplace in Tasmania and employ Tasmanian staff in operating their services.
- State government organisations that
- a. Are not part of 'The Crown'; and
- b. Are not bound by the State Service Act
Commonwealth government organisations are not eligible.
Group training organisations or other employment brokers are eligible only as an employer for their direct employees. Employees placed with host employers are not accepted as direct employees of the group training organisation or employment broker.
Entry process and judging
Complete all parts of the online entry form, which contains detailed instructions for use. Entries will be judged by a panel comprising representatives from recognised Employers of Choice and the Department of State Growth.
If your entry is short-listed, you’ll need to agree to a workplace visit by the judging panel, which will include separate interviews with the employer (business owner/CEO/senior management team) and staff.
The judging panel will select one or more organisations as Tasmanian Employers of Choice. The panel will base its decisions on written entries and workplace visits of short-listed entrants.
The workplace visit will include interviews with the employer (business owner/CEO/senior management group/leaders) and separate discussions with non-management staff.
Events and workshops
Recognised Employers of Choice and business leaders generously share their knowledge and ideas on successful workplace practices at regular forums, workshops and networking sessions around the State.
Program partners and subject matter experts also offer learning and development opportunities for organisations that want to improve the ways they support their staff.
