As your business grows, you may need to take on staff to help you. There are six main types of employment options, full time, part time, fixed term, apprentices and trainees and subcontractors. What type of arrangement you undertake needs to be linked to your business plan, growth strategy, and what is most suitable to help you grow.
Employer of Choice Assist (EOCA)
EOCA is a free service offering tailored assistance to small businesses with 20 or fewer full-time employees, helping them build a positive workplace culture.
The service covers a wide ranges of areas including hiring staff for the first time, employment contract reviews, managing employee issues and ensuring compliance with the Fair Work Act.
The service is funded by the Tasmanian Government through Jobs Tasmania and is delivered by the Tasmanian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (TCCI).

Hiring Employee checklist
The Hiring Employees checklist helps you meet Australian laws when hiring and also includes helpful tips.
You will need to meet:
- Legal obligations: These include employee’s rights under anti-discrimination laws, record keeping requirements and paying the correct wages and workplace health and safety obligations.
- Tax and super obligations.
- Workers compensation obligations: Workers compensation insurance is compulsory.
Fair Work
Fair Work is another fantastic resource, that will help you with things such as:
- which award applies to your staff
- how much and how you should pay your staff
- leave entitlements
- employee contracts
- other entitlements.
Small business can access information about workplace obligations through the Fair Work Ombudsman Small Business Showcase. It has resources and information covering everything from hiring employees, calculation pay and resolving issues in the workplace. Their Employer Advisory Service (EAS) gives small business employers free tailored written advice about pay and conditions to ensure Fair Work Act obligations are met.

The Workforce Australia providers offer businesses localised and tailored assistance to fill their vacancies. They can assist with the whole recruitment process, from short-listing and pre-screening suitable candidates to helping business access eligible wage subsidies and other financial support.
Workforce Specialists
For business and industry groups needing support with larger recruitment the department will coordinate a package of support including tailored projects delivered by Workforce Specialists.
A dedicated Contact Centre is available for businesses who need assistance using the online service or just general advice on what support is best for them.
