Licences and permits

To start and run a business in Tasmania there are a range of registrations and permits you may need.  The Australian Business Licence and Information Service (ABLIS) is a free online service that will help you find the right local, Tasmanian and Australian Government licences, permits, registrations and approvals you need to operate a business.

Visit ABLIS to receive a personalised report containing:

  • a summary of local, state and Australian Government requirements
  • detailed information about licences and permits
  • approval timeframes for most state government permits and licences
  • how to access relevant forms
  • who to contact for more help and information.

If you would like assistance with ABLIS, please contact the Business Tasmania team on 1800 440 026 or email ask@business.tas.gov.au The team can also talk to you about the range of support they offer to assist you to start or run a business.

Contact your local council to discuss planning laws, zoning requirements and what other issues such as home business requirements apply to you.

Many of the licences and permits required can be paid at Service Tasmania, with convenient locations across the state.

Red Tape Reduction

The Tasmanian Government has also developed a toolkit to support Agritourism in Tasmania. This includes detail on the approvals and permits to start an agritourism business and how to navigate the regulatory process.

If you have experienced red tape challenges in your business, you can access the Red Tape Reduction eHub – a direct channel to help reduce unnecessary bureaucracy and streamline regulations. The eHub is a centralised platform where businesses can submit suggestions to reduce excessive or outdated regulations that may be hindering efficiency, growth or investment.
